In JAPN 305, I studied Japanese history, religion, and cultural practices. Starting from the Jomon period, we studied pottery from prehistorical Japan and what their meanings were, Shintoism in Ainu culture and how it affects modern Japanese mannerisms as well as Buddhism and how it fused with Shintoism in Japan, as well as Onmyodo which is not widely practiced. We also studied different regions of Japan and how their cultural festivals and specialties vary from region to region. We even formed groups and created a mock travel plan based on the different regions we researched. Finally we wrote a paper on comparing parts of Japanese culture and how they related to modern Japan.
In JAPN 215 we learned about modern Japan in both Pop Culture and traditional aspects and how people both in Japan and overseas view certain aspects of Japanese culture as cool. From ukiyoe, to Japan's kawaii culture. We studied many aspects of Japan and watched videos produced in Japan to inform people on their history. My favorite section was ikebana by far. Throughout the course we also wrote essays reflecting on parts of Japanese culture we liked and formed groups to give presentations on aspects of Japanese culture we liked. My presentations can be viewed below.

2.2 Students develop analytical and critical thinking in areas such as how Japan’s cultural background influences modern Japanese life, how to compare their own culture with the Japanese culture, or how Japanese culture relates to other world cultures in an age of global inter-relatedness.

In JAPN 306, I studied the Japanese mindset in a group based discussion setting with a few lectures. During class we were given short lectures on a particular subject such as social etiquette, the sempai/kohai system or other aspects of Japanese society and then in a group setting analyzed the motivation for things with both American and Japanese exchange students. Most of the content of the class related to modern Japanese social expectations and comparisons between the American way of thinking in situations and the Japanese way of thinking in situations. More often than not the differences in thinking weren't too extreme with many aspects of Japanese mindset deemed as stereotypes. We also gave presentations in a group setting on Japanese social etiquette and gave a final presentation and paper on commentary on the Japanese mind.
