JAPN 403 Pre-Capstone
Course Description: This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to develop research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media. (Credit/ No Credit Available) (Prereq: JAPN 300 or equivalent)
During my Fall 2016 semester, I took my Pre-Capstone class with Sekine-sensei. The focus of the class was preperation for my senior Capstone project and giving feedback to other groups. In the beginning of the semester, we formed pairs to continue on for our Capstone project and gave our proposals for our ideas on our Capstone. After undergoing peer review and receiving permission from both Sekine and Saito-sensei, we then began to formaly work on our Capstone and begin our base ideas, such as our research questions, sample survey questions and finding our research literature. We performed numerous presentations to prepare us for Capstone and constantly were giving and being given advice from other pairs and Sekine-sensei. My partner and I decided to do our Capstone on Memes in social media, and to do a comparative analysis between Japan and America. I felt far more prepared for my coming senior Capstone in the coming Spring semester and felt much of the work required was now done.
For example, a comparison of memes being the Japanese meme of Jojo posing and how it became popular both in Japan and American. We want to discover why memes become popular, how they spread between cultures, and what motivates the different types and their creation between the two cultures.

Along with doing prepatory work for our Capstone, we also related our work to our major MLOs. Our capstone is a culmination of all the work that we have accomplished at CSUMB, and therefore it needs to be a reflection of our work and MLOs. Our Capstone needs to demonstrate our proficiency in the Japanese language, familiarity with Japanese culture, our ability to correlate Japanese culture with other non-related cultures, and our personal observations and experiences while studying abroad in Japan. Eventually our capstone will be conducted concurrently both in English and Japanese which means we have to make sure our findings and studies are understandable and related both in English and Japanese. A deeper understanding of Japanese culture and motivations is required to be able to analyze the differences in future responses between Japanese and American correspondants. My experiences studying abroad in Japan also served to inspire my curioisty on this subject and will help me to better understand the results.
Listed below is the final presentation for my pre-capstone, which gives a basic idea of my plan for my Capstone as well as a skeleton of what to expect.
