SPAN 307: History&Politics of Mexico
Course Description: Examines Mexico's history and its peoples from indigenous periods to the arrival of Europeans and Spanish colonization including the mission system and rancherìas of California, New Mexico, and Colorado. Focuses on the independence movement and Mexico's relationship with the United States during westward expansion. Examines the 20th century by focusing on the Mexican Revolution and the factors which have resulted in continuous northern migration.
SPAN 307 educated me on the history of Mexico dating back to the colonial period all the way up until the modern era. With the rising amount of conflicts and social tension between the United States and Mexico I thought it would be important for me to know more about our neighboring country and its history. Thanks to this class I have come to understand just how much of a troubled past Mexico has had dating all the way back to the colonial period when the indigenous people were first conquered.
Through group discussions in each class we talked about different readings through history of Mexico as well as looking up current news to Mexico to analyze the repeating factors that appear in news related to Mexico and how its a reflection of Mexico's past.
