In JAPN 403 we studied past world language students previous studies in order to gain a better idea of what is expected and to form an idea for what sort of study we would like to do as all Japanese major students must undergo a research and study in some aspect comparing Japanese society, culture or people to its foreign counterpart. For my research, I studied the usage of internet memes by both American and Japanese college students, and what the preference in memes and spread of memes in social media says about both groups and how their culture affects them.

Continuing from studying previously graduated students, in JAPN 403 we began our research into a proposed topic ideas by gathering information on the subject both in English and in Japanese using many different sources to develop a literary background to help us develop questions to ask in our surveys. By finding information on meme development in the past in both America and Japan, I was able to come up with sufficient questions for my survey.

By conducting a survey on what memes do both groups like, dislike, their familiarity with memes and motivations for sharing memes, I was able to analyze and the different motivations on and differences in Japanese and American college students and eventually gave a presentation on my findings.
During my Senior Capstone, I surveyed 80 American and Japanese students through Google Forms in order to conduct research on Internet Memes and Social Media. Although I learned much from research, such as the differences in motivations and likes and dislikes of entertainment between cultures, I feel that I can still learn more by becoming more familiar with Japanese internet culture and continuing my research with an even broader mind.
