In SPAN 307, I learned about Mexican history and culture and was able to come to understand the motivations for many Mexicans and Mexican Americans in the modern society. Mexico is heavily influenced by it's colonial past both from the Spaniards and the native Indian people who view being conquered as an extreme mark of shame and continue to carry it to this day. Mexican culture is similar in some aspects to Japanese culture as well, both being a fusion of two different people coming together in one land.

Also within 307, we compared the perspectives of American history and mindset with Mexican history and mindset on many issues that have happened in the past between the two cultures. For example, while the American mindset states the American progressing into Mexican territory and taking the land was justified, the Mexican mindset views Americans coming west as an invasion and the land unjustly stolen. While Mexico has repeatedly both in the past and in the modern era tried to replicate the US in culture, society and politics before, it has never met with great success in doing so. We strove to find out the underlying reasonings for this.
