JAPN 305 - Introduction to Japanese Culture and Civilization
Course Description: This course introduces various aspects of Japanese culture, including history, geography, religion, government, politics, customs and traditions. After a broad historical overview beginning in prehistory, this course focuses on the Tokugawa period as the bedrock for understanding modern Japanese society as a mass society.
In JAPN 305, we studied the beginnings of Japanese civilization dating all the way back to the Jomon period, onward. From the different clay pottery that the Ainu people created, till modern Japanese society and religion, we studied many aspects of Japanese religion, historical values, and cultural practices.
For instance, in comparison to western cultures that can be said to be heavily influenced by Christian, Jewish, Islamic and other types of religions, Japan is heavily by both the native Shinto and Buddhist religions, both consciously and unconsciously. Japanese culture is a mixture of both the native Ainu people as well as the Yayoi people coming from the western China and Korean lands. For a final assessment, we created both a travel plan for visiting throughout Japan in groups, as well as wrote an essay on what we found interesting in the development of Japanese culture and analyzed how it relates to modern Japan.
