JAPN 380: Japan: Land and People
Course Description: This course introduces the language and culture of Japan through a thematic approach. Selected topics include geography, climate, population, and industry. This course is designed to develop advanced Japanese language competency and to introduce various aspects of related Japanese culture using technology and web-based materials.
In JAPN 380, using an online resource and textbook, we learned about various aspects of Japan ranging from the different regions to climates, local customs and traditions, natural disasters, social issues and more.
Each chapter was dedicated to a specific subject, and thanks to this class I can now name the 8 different regions of Japan, its surrounding oceans, the natural disasters that tend to occur there and am more informed about Japan's aging society. During the semester I gave presentations on blizzards which are a natural disaster in Japan, Hokkaido and its food culture and tourist attractions, and the Great Hanshin Earthquake.
